Dr Ben Smith is a Clinical Research Physiotherapist based at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS FT. He holds an Honorary Assistant Professor post at the University of Nottingham in their Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing in the Medical School.
Ben’s research interest includes the management of persistent musculoskeletal pain and the role of exercise and physical activity in prevention and treatment. He has published widely on pain and exercise, both with primary and secondary research.
In 2016 he won an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship to conduct a PhD at the University of Nottingham related to the assessment and management of pain around the kneecap in young adults, particularly concerning exercise prescription. In 2019 he completed his second NIHR Fellowship with an NIHR Clinical Trials Fellowship at the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit.
Ben’s methodological expertise is in the conduct and reporting of clinical trials and systematic reviews (meta-analysis) focusing on epidemiology and treatment effectiveness. He is a member of the International Patellofemoral Research Network (iPFRN) steering committee for their 2019 consensus statement on psychological and pain features of patellofemoral pain.
